CAREX comans Frosted Curls
Attractive small-growing native grass for the garden, with frosted silver-green foliage and interesting curled top. Leaves curve to the ground in a graceful fountain shape. Hardy, tolerant of sun or part shade, dry conditions and frost. Cut back hard if it becomes untidy. Lovely mass planted or for edging paths.
Evergreen - 30cm x 50cm

CAREX dipsacea - Tahoata
A vigorous native grass with green foliage, slightly tinged with red. Quickly forms a rounded tussocky clump, making it ideal for planting in the garden, on banks or beside a pond. Extremely hardy, and tolerant of dry to wet sites; often used in native wetland plantings. Grows in sun or part shade. If plants become untidy, cut back hard or 'groom' to remove old foliage and flower heads.

CAREX lessoniana - Rautahi, Spreading Swamp Sedge
A tough, vigorous native grass, often used in wetland and native revegetation plantings. Ideal for stabilising stream banks. Extremely hardy and tolerant of damp or wet sites, but will also grow in normal soils, sun or part shade. Leaves are rich, bright to dark green, with harsh edges. Rautahi's wide creeping rhizome often results in a plant wider than it is high.

CAREX secta - Pukio
A large, vigorous native grass, ideal for planting in the garden or beside a pond, and used extensively in wetland and native revegetation plantings. Extremely hardy and tolerant of damp or wet sites, including shallow water or swamps. Grows in sun or part shade. If plants become untidy, cut back hard. They will recover rapidly with renewed vigour.

CAREX testacea
Densely tufted native grass with green and brick-red foliage and long drooping, tassel-like flower heads. Hardy, surviving in full sun, frost, damp to dry conditions and harsh coastal conditions. Great mass planted; works well as a contrast to bronze flaxes. Plants which have become untidy can be cut back hard. They will soon regenerate.

CAREX virgata
Handsome, vigorous, bright green swamp sedge, which also grows quite happily on dry sites, in sun or semi-shade. It is very similar to Carex secta, but doesn't grow quite as large, and maintains a deeper green colour. Foliage is coarse and sharp edged. Useful in mass plantings, on banks, stream edges and in native wetland plantings. Plants which have become untidy can be cut back hard. They will soon regenerate.

CASUARINA cunninghamiana - River Sheoke
A very fast, tough Australian tree, commonly used for shelterbelts; will trim to whatever size is required. Favoured by orchardists because it tends not to harbour pests and diseases, and is less dense than other evergreens, allowing free circulation of air. Excellent for erosion control and makes good, hot-burning firewood. Takes strong winds and dry to damp conditions.

CEDRUS atlantica - Atlas Cedar
Native to Algeria, this large-growing conifer has a distinctly pyramidal form when young, broadening in maturity. Tufts of green, short needles clothe almost horizontal branches, which ascend slightly at the tips. Drought and exposure tolerant; mulch to smother competing grass and retain moisture. Needs plenty of space.

CEDRUS deodara - Indian Cedar, Himalayan Cedar
Large conifer of beautiful pyramidal form, with attractive blue-grey foliage and branches gracefully pendulous at the tips. A lovely ornamental tree, needing plenty of space. Often used in the South Island as a dry country shelter tree. Drought and exposure tolerant; mulch to smother competing grass and retain moisture.

COPROSMA acerosa Hawera
Tough, flat-growing native ground cover, forming a tight mat a small, olive-green leaves. Tolerant of drought, ocean spray, wind, sun or shade and most soils, including sandy, but avoid wet spots. Spreads prostrate, almost like a lawn, gradually mounding with age. Works well spilling over a wall.
Evergreen - 30cm high x 2m wide

An outstanding, rugged ground cover or wall spiller, forming a tight, tangled mat of dark reddish brown foliage with springy intertwining branchlets; especially useful for steep or difficult areas. Vigorous and hardy, tolerating drought, ocean spray, wind, full sun or shade. Happy in sandy soils and most others, except wet.

A new low growing native ground cover with very flat habit and almost black foliage which provides a good colour contrast in mixed plantings. Great on banks, in borders and spilling over retaining walls. Tough and hardy, taking drought, frost, wind, sun or shade and most soils, including sandy, but avoid wet sites.
