Asplenium bulbiferum - Hen & Chickens Fern
An easy-to-grow fern for full or partial shade. Tolerates dry soils but prefers moist conditions. New foliage is bright green and darkens as it ages. Fernlets (the 'chickens') develop on older leaves. These can be plucked off and grown. Frost tolerant.

Astelia banksii - Wharawhara
A New Zealand native flax-like plant with curving silvery-green leaves and panicles of fragrant, pale green flowers on 50cm stems. On female plants, the flowers produce greenish-white fruit which become magenta-purple when mature. Tolerant of dry soils and coastal extremes; does best in a location which avoids the hottest midday sun.

An attractive tufted, flax-like plant, found naturally on the forest-floor or perched in trees. Silvery-green leaves make a dramatic contrast in mixed plantings, especially with purple or red foliaged plants. Small bird-attracting fruit follows inconspicuous flowers. Will grow in full sun, but prefers part or full shade; coastal hardy and needs well drained soils.

A New Zealand native flax-like plant with rusty reddish foliage and panicles of flowers appearing in summer. On female plants, the flowers produce greenish-white fruit, which become magenta-purple when mature. Likes open free draining soil, good air movement and partial shade.

Attractive native forest giant that starts off upright and slender, but develops into a large, round headed tree, perfect for shade or as a specimen. Looks good in any native planting. Kereru (pigeons) eat the dark purple autumn fruit. Tough in the wind, takes normal soils. Frost tender when young.

Betula nigra - River Birch
Rugged pyramidal quick-growing tree with diamond-shaped leaves, bright green on top and silvery underneath. Autumn leaves are golden yellow. Glossy, smooth pinkish brown young bark turns blackish with age, then peels off in large flaky curling sheets. Quite at home in soil which is wet in winter and dried out in summer. Eventually a big tree, so needs plenty of space.

Graceful, slightly pendulous tree, favoured for its white trunk and delicate foliage. Excellent for lining drives, as specimens, or planting in groups. For a natural woodland effect, plant at irregular spacing. Mulch well to keep roots cool and moist, especially for the first two or three summers. Avoid wet sites.

Grows in sunny to shady conditions but prefers some shade. Has long fronds, sprouting from a tufted crown, can develop a small trunk. Easy to grow.

A small growing, vigorous native ground fern with ladder fronds. Doesn't mind a sunny position but avoid full midday sun. Also tolerates coastal conditions. Prefers moist soils and performs best when mulched.

Buxus sempervirens - English Box
Slow-growing dense low hedge, excellent for clipping or topiary. Very hardy and tolerant of most soils except wet. Takes coastal wind, and grows in sun or shade. Fertilise regularly to maintain lush greenness. Spacing for hedging: 15cm (6 inches) is ideal if you want your plants to join up quickly.

Callistemon John Mashlan - Pink Bottlebrush
Tough but pretty shrub, with masses of candyfloss pink flowers in spring and autumn. Birds love the flowers, especially tui. A very fast screen or filler; can be used as a formal clipped hedge (50cm to 70cm spacing), or as a low shelter (1m spacing). Tolerant of drought, wind and damp soils. Flowers better in full sun, and a light trim after flowering helps keep plant bushy.

Clipping occasionally will help maintain bushiness, while more frequent clipping will produce a good hedge. Flowers best in full sun.
