COROKIA X VIRGATA Emerald 'n' Jade
A very hardy shrub for almost any well drained situation, including coastal, dry and windy, full sun or part shade. Forms an upright, multi branched shrub with fine green leaves and greyish stems. Masses of tiny yellow summer flowers are followed by small yellow autumn berries, loved by birds. Excellent as a low clipped hedge or small screen, and quite happy under big trees.

COROKIA X VIRGATA Frosted Chocolate
A very hardy shrub for full sun or partial shade. Will grow under big trees and on the coast. Tiny yellow flowers are followed by red berries. Chocolate-brown leaves intensify in colour in cooler months. Excellent as a low clipped hedge or small screen.
Evergreen - 2m x 1.2m

CRYPTOMERIA japonica - Japanese Cedar
Hardy conifer, makes excellent shelter or timber. Fast-growing, will stand strong winds, including some salt winds, and gives best results in good soils. Avoid wet sites. Responds well to trimming, and is often seen trimmed to as little as half a metre wide. Spacing: 1.5m for shelter, 1m for smaller hedges. Note: it is normal for plants to "brown off" after planting.

CUPRESSUS glabra Blue Ice
A beautiful frosted blue smaller growing conifer, with neat, upright, compact habit. Ideal for hedging, but also useful as a contrast shrub in mixed plantings. Easy care and tolerant of a range of conditions, including wind, frost and dryness, but dislikes wet feet.
Evergreen - 5m x 3.5m

CUPRESSUS lusitanica - Mexican Cypress
Very useful cypress for shelter, timber, firewood & small clipped hedges. Dense, hardy and fast-growing, with a higher resistance to canker than macrocarpa or Leyland Cypress. Best suited to mild climates, away from strong coastal salt winds or extreme exposure. Thrives on fertile soil with summer moisture, but avoid wet sites. Spacing: shelter 1.5m, small hedge, 1m, timber 3x3m, firewood, 2x2m.

DODONAEA viscosa - Ake Ake
An erect, fast-growing, densely foliaged shrub producing masses of cream ornamental inflated seed pods in summer. Very tough, tolerating salt-laden winds, drought and frost. Ideal for native revegetation, erosion control, ornamental screens, clipped hedges or group plantings. If possible, keep trimmed when young to allow root establishment to keep up with top growth.

DODONAEA viscosa Purpurea - Purple Ake Ake
An erect, densely foliaged bronze-purple shrub. Colour is better in full sun, and light trimming encourages colourful new growth and bushiness. Ideal for erosion control, native revegetation, screens, clipped hedges or group plantings; tolerates salt-laden winds, drought and frost. If possible, keep trimmed when young so top growth doesn't get ahead of root establishment.
Evergreen - 3m x 1m

ESCALLONIA
Attractive, fast-growing shrub with arching branches and dense, deep-green foliage to ground level, with reddish new growth. Masses of pink flowers appear late spring to autumn. Useful border shrub, screen or small clipped hedge. Tough, growing in most soil conditions except wet, in sun and part shade; wind and salt spray tolerant.

EUCALYPTUS Baby Blue
Small-growing gum with blue-grey leaves, ideal for mixed borders, giving a good contrast with other colours, especially reds and bronzes. Foliage is often used in floral work and is suited to commercial production. Drought tolerant when established. Protect from frost when young.

FAGUS sylvatica purpurea - Copper Beech
Large, slow-growing spreading tree of great beauty, with branches sweeping to the ground. Leaves are a deep purple-brown, turning lighter golden-copper in autumn. Makes a lovely specimen, flourishing when protected from strong winds. Often used as a clipped hedge in English gardens. Grows in full or partial sun, in most soils except wet.

FEIJOA Mammoth

GRISELINIA lucida - Puka, Akapuka
A very tough, wind-hardy native plant whose natural habitat is rocky coastal sites (in nature, it often starts life as an epiphyte). Similar to Kapuka, but with bigger leaves, excellent for screens, shelter or mixed plantings

Thrives in most conditions, in sun or semi-shade, but avoid wet sites. If used in a garden situation, trim back by a third after flowering and feed with a general fertiliser.

A very fast, attractive and hardy shrub, native to NSW. Has bronze-purple glossy leaves, and manuka-like creamy-white flowers. Tolerant of most conditions from dry, windy and harsh to moist. Excellent hedge or border specimen.
