PITTOSPORUM variegatum - Variegated Pittosporum
A lovely compact specimen, screen or hedge, with erect habit and tidy appearance. Cream-margined leaves give a silvery-grey effect, making this a nice contrast with plain green varieties in mixed borders. Grows in most conditions except wet or very windy. Mulching, feeding and a light trim will promote lush, healthy, bushy growth. Spacing for hedge: 80cm to 1m.
Evergreen - 3m x 1.5m

PLAGIANTHUS regius - Ribbonwood
A reasonably quick-growing native with very distinctive juvenile and adult forms. Juvenile trees have dainty leaves on interlacing branchlets and a slim upright habit for 5 to 7 years. Adult form is similar to lacebark, with strongly upright growth, bigger leaves and masses of cream-green flowers. Can be kept in juvenile form by removing upright growth as it appears. Copes with strong winds and damp soils.
Semi-deciduous - 5m x 4m

PODOCARPUS totara - Totara
One of NZ's forest giants, totara can be more shrub-like when young. Planted in the open, it is often densely branched and pyramidal in shape, and staking is required to keep it going up straight. If growing on the forest floor, totara will head for the sunlight and stay straight. Foliage can be bronze to green. Hardy to wind and frost and will tolerate damp soils and coastal conditions.
Evergreen - 6m x 4m @ 10 years

PODOCARPUS totara Aurea - Golden Totara
Graceful branches and rich golden foliage make this a beautiful specimen tree for the garden. Planted in the open, it is often densely branched and pyramidal in shape. Staking may be required if a more upright form is desired. Use as a specimen tree or attractive hedge. Hardy to wind and frost and will tolerate damp soils and coastal conditions.
Evergreen - 5m x 3m

PRUNUS lusitanica - Portugese Laurel
A large shrub or small tree, this evergreen cherry has dark green glossy leaves and small white flowers in 15cm racemes, late spring-summer, followed by red to black cherries in February and March. Great as a screen, hedge or specimen, especially in more formal gardens. Works well in a tub or limbed up as an avenue tree. Hardy and easy to grow in well-drained soils.
Evergreen - 5m x 4m

SALIX humboldtiana - Pencil Willow
A tall, narrow, graceful willow, ideal as screening or shelter where height is required without width. Makes an attractive drive liner. Wind hardy; grows quickly and performs best in moist conditions, but avoid swampy. Stays evergreen in mild winters.
Semi-evergreen - 8m x 1.5m

SYZYGIUM paniculatum - Australian Rose Apple
Fast-growing with graceful branches, red new shoots and fluffy white flowers in summer followed by purple berries in winter, which are great fodder for birds. Ideal quick screen, shelter, clipped hedge or specimen. Frost tender when young. Suits most soils except wet and takes a reasonable amount of wind. May need occasional spray with insecticide for psyllid, visible as tiny lumps in the leaves.
Evergreen - 7m x 5m

TEUCRIUM fruticans - Silver Germander
A small Mediterranean shrub enjoying hot, dry sunny locations. Tolerant of coastal exposure. Forms a loose, fast growing bush, with 2cm lavender-blue flowers through most of the year. Ideal as a low box-clipped hedge or an informal screen; will also happily fill an awkward corner or a bank when mass planted. To keep bushy, pinch back long shoots during the growth period. Does not like wet soils.
Evergreen - 1.5m x 1.5m

VIBURNUM tinus Eve Price
Attractive, hardy, flowering shrub from the Mediterranean, with compact form and dense, lush green foliage to ground level. Fragrant flowers appear winter through to spring, starting as red buds and opening to white tinted pink. Blue black berries, liked by birds, follow in summer. Good for hedges, screens and mixed borders. Will grow in full sun or semi shade, in free draining soil.
Evergreen - 1.5m x 1.3m

WESTRINGIA brevifolia Highlight - Variegated Australian Rosemary
Hardy and compact rounded small shrub which will grow in coastal conditions. Can be used as a clipped hedge, low maintenance specimen shrub or as an attractive filler for full sun or partial shade situations. Dainty mauve-blue flowers appear from late spring through summer. Thrives in dry to normal conditions, and can be cut back hard.
Evergreen - 1.5m x 1.5m

WESTRINGIA fruticosa - Coastal Rosemary
Extremely hardy and compact plant with rosemary like foliage, deep green and silvery underneath, which forms a dense, twiggy bush. Small white to pale mauve flowers appear from late winter through to summer. Perfect as a clipped hedge or low maintenance specimen shrub, and useful for filling large areas quickly. Grows well in most situations, including coastal. Avoid wet sites.
Evergreen - 1.5m x 1.5m
