PITTOSPORUM crassifolium - Karo
Excellent coastal hardy evergreen native. Toughest of all pittosporums, standing the strongest of winds, salt and dryness. Okay in sand, but not happy in heavy wet soils. Good nurse tree in revegetation plantings. Has small, dark red flowers with lovely scent. Trimming and feeding annually will help promote lushness. Hedge spacing: 1m.

PITTOSPORUM eugenoides - Lemonwood, Tarata
Great hedge, screen, specimen. Black spots on leaves disappear with age. Tough and fast with a neat conical shape; remains bushy to ground if grass controlled underneath. Grows 5 to 6m or more, but can be clipped hard for a smaller hedge. Easy to grow in most soils, sun or shade, but avoid wet spots. Mulching, feeding and a light trim will promote lushness. Hedge spacing: 1m.

PITTOSPORUM eugenoides Variegata - Variegated Lemonwood
A dense, compact, variegated form of lemonwood, with pale green leaves margined creamy white. Excellent for hedging or as a contrast in mixed borders. Grows in most conditions except wet or very windy. Mulching, feeding and a light trim will promote lush, healthy, bushy growth. Spacing for hedge: 1m.

PITTOSPORUM tenuifolium - Kohuhu
No-fuss native, excellent for hedges, screens and specimen. Good infill shrub in native revegetation plantings. Fast-growing with a neat pyramidal shape. Tiny red-black, sweetly scented flowers appear early summer. Grows 5 - 6m, but can be clipped hard for a smaller hedge. Easy to grow in almost any soil, sun or shade - but do not plant in wet spots. Mulching, feeding and a light trim will promote lush, healthy, bushy growth. Spacing for hedge - 1m.

PITTOSPORUM tenuifolium Humpty Dumpty Syn. Emerald Star PVR
A true dwarf pittosporum growing wider than it does high, with very dense branching habit to the ground and good speed of growth; virtually pest free. Makes a superb hedge, trimmed or untrimmed, up to 1m tall. Or use on its own in a border or mixed planting to make a lovely round mound. Likes average to good soils, part shade or full sun. Avoid wet sites. Humpty Dumpty was discovered here at McKechnie Nurseries, named by us and first released to the NZ public in 2006.
Evergreen - 1m high x 1.5m wide

Compact, bushy cultivar with uniform fresh-green leaves. Excellent for hedging or as a contrast with variegated pittosporums in borders. Grows in most conditions except wet or very windy. Mulching, feeding and a light trim will promote lush, healthy, bushy growth. Spacing for hedge: 80cm to 1m.

PITTOSPORUM variegatum - Variegated Pittosporum
A lovely compact specimen, screen or hedge, with erect habit and tidy appearance. Cream-margined leaves give a silvery-grey effect, making this a nice contrast with plain green varieties in mixed borders. Grows in most conditions except wet or very windy. Mulching, feeding and a light trim will promote lush, healthy, bushy growth. Spacing for hedge: 80cm to 1m.

PRUNUS lusitanica - Portugese Laurel
A large shrub or small tree, this evergreen cherry has dark green glossy leaves and small white flowers in 15cm racemes, late spring-summer, followed by red to black cherries in February and March. Great as a screen, hedge or specimen, especially in more formal gardens. Works well in a tub or limbed up as an avenue tree. Hardy and easy to grow in well-drained soils.

PSEUDOPANAX arboreus - Five Finger, Puahou
Tropical-looking, much-branched small native tree, useful as specimen, shade, shelter or erosion control. Also a fast-growing nurse tree in revegetation projects. Sweet scented yellowish-green flowers are followed by ma sses of small purple fruit in spring, attracting tui and silvereye. Grows in sun or part shade, poor soils, dry or damp soils and windy/coastal spots.

PSEUDOPANAX laetus - Broad-leaved Five Finger
A fast-growing multi-branched bushy shrub with deep-green glossy leaves, which are broader and more tropical looking than those of the common five finger. Tui feed on the nectar in spring and the fruit in autumn. Grows in sun or shade and most soil conditions except wet. Slightly frost tender. Wind tolerant.
Evergreen - 3m x 1.5m

PSEUDOPANAX lessonii - Coastal Five Finger, Houpara
A tough, coast-hardy shrub with attractive leathery leaves. An excellent fast-growing addition to mixed plantings; its lush look is well suited to tropical gardens. In autumn, birds feed on the purple fruit, which follow tiny green flowers. Grows in sun or part shade and most soil conditions except wet. Wind and frost tolerant.

PSEUDOPANAX lessonii Goldfinger
Beautiful native with finger like, bright golden new growth ageing to dark green. Great in mixed plantings as a contrast to greens, purples and silver-blues. Avoid wet areas, otherwise happy in average soils, in semi shade or full sun (colour will be better in full sun). Takes coastal, windy sites. Birds attracted to the seeds.

SOPHORA microphylla Dragon's Gold - Dwarf Kowhai
A compact dwarf form of kowhai that flowers well from a young age, with showy displays of yellow flowers in clusters winter and early summer. A colourful addition to a smaller garden, and very effective as a tub plant. Protect from strong winds and avoid wet soils. Plant in full sun or part shade.
Semi-evergreen - 1m x 1m

TEUCRIUM fruticans - Silver Germander
A small Mediterranean shrub enjoying hot, dry sunny locations. Tolerant of coastal exposure. Forms a loose, fast growing bush, with 2cm lavender-blue flowers through most of the year. Ideal as a low box-clipped hedge or an informal screen; will also happily fill an awkward corner or a bank when mass planted. To keep bushy, pinch back long shoots during the growth period. Does not like wet soils.

VIBURNUM tinus Eve Price
Attractive, hardy, flowering shrub from the Mediterranean, with compact form and dense, lush green foliage to ground level. Fragrant flowers appear winter through to spring, starting as red buds and opening to white tinted pink. Blue black berries, liked by birds, follow in summer. Good for hedges, screens and mixed borders. Will grow in full sun or semi shade, in free draining soil.

WESTRINGIA brevifolia Highlight - Variegated Australian Rosemary
Hardy and compact rounded small shrub which will grow in coastal conditions. Can be used as a clipped hedge, low maintenance specimen shrub or as an attractive filler for full sun or partial shade situations. Dainty mauve-blue flowers appear from late spring through summer. Thrives in dry to normal conditions, and can be cut back hard.

WESTRINGIA fruticosa - Coastal Rosemary
Extremely hardy and compact plant with rosemary like foliage, deep green and silvery underneath, which forms a dense, twiggy bush. Small white to pale mauve flowers appear from late winter through to summer. Perfect as a clipped hedge or low maintenance specimen shrub, and useful for filling large areas quickly. Grows well in most situations, including coastal. Avoid wet sites.
