ALECTRYON excelsus - Titoki, New Zealand Oak
Attractive large native with short trunk, spreading branches and glossy foliage. Striking red and black fruit enjoyed by the birds follow little rust-red flowers in early summer. Excellent specimen, shade or drive tree. Easily trimmed to desired size. Frost tender when young, and dislikes very windy or wet conditions.
Evergreen - 7m x 4m

ASTELIA banksii - Wharawhara
A New Zealand native flax-like plant with curving silvery-green leaves and panicles of fragrant, pale green flowers on 50cm stems. On female plants, the flowers produce greenish-white fruit which become magenta-purple when mature. Tolerant of dry soils and coastal extremes; does best in a location which avoids the hottest midday sun.

ASTELIA chathamica - Chatham Is. Astelia
An attractive tufted, flax-like plant, found naturally on the forest-floor or perched in trees. Silvery-green leaves make a dramatic contrast in mixed plantings, especially with purple or red foliaged plants. Small bird-attracting fruit follows inconspicuous flowers. Will grow in full sun, but prefers part or full shade; coastal hardy and needs well drained soils.

ASTELIA nervosa Westland
A New Zealand native flax-like plant with rusty reddish foliage and panicles of flowers appearing in summer. On female plants, the flowers produce greenish-white fruit, which become magenta-purple when mature. Likes open free draining soil, good air movement and partial shade.

BEILSCHMIEDIA tarairi - Taraire
Attractive native forest giant that starts off upright and slender, but develops into a large, round headed tree, perfect for shade or as a specimen. Looks good in any native planting. Kereru (pigeons) eat the dark purple autumn fruit. Tough in the wind, takes normal soils. Frost tender when young.
Evergreen - 8m x 5m @ 10 years

CALLISTEMON John Mashlan - Pink Bottlebrush
Tough but pretty shrub, with masses of candyfloss pink flowers in spring and autumn. Birds love the flowers, especially tui. A very fast screen or filler; can be used as a formal clipped hedge (50cm to 70cm spacing), or as a low shelter (1m spacing). Tolerant of drought, wind and damp soils. Flowers better in full sun, and a light trim after flowering helps keep plant bushy.

Tough, wind-hardy, coastal-hardy, fast-growing shrub for moist to dry conditions. Excellent for banks, borders and screens. Prolific bright-red flowers spring and early summer attract birds (especially tuis) and give a colourful display. Clipping occasionally will help maintain bushiness, while more frequent clipping will produce a good hedge. Flowers best in full sun.

An easy to grow, small native tree with airy, tiered branches and dainty marbled leaves. Clusters of small white flowers in spring/summer are followed by round green then black seed capsules. Often found naturally on streamsides; used extensively in revegetation projects. Grows in full sun to deep shade, in dry to damp soils.

A versatile, tough shrub with small, rounded, glossy, rich-green leaves. Compact and bushy, it is ideal for shaping and makes a beautiful ornamental hedge. Or use as a superior green filler. Hardy and tolerant of coastal winds, poor, dry or sandy soils, sun or shade. Hardier to frost than Coprosma repens.

CORDYLINE australis - Ti Kouka, Cabbage Tree
This palm-like New Zealand icon is very easy to grow in conditions ranging from windy, dry and sandy to swampy; sun or shade. Great for landscaping, especially in mixed plantings; also used extensively in native revegetation and wetland plantings. Spray for caterpillars at first sign of infestation (holes in leaves), and avoid piling bark mulch up against the trunk, as it harbours slaters, which chew the trunks.
