ARTHROPODIUM cirratum Matapouri Bay - Reinga Lily
Forms a small, flax-like clump with broad, blue-hued leaves, topped in summer by masses of starry white flowers on long stems. Ideal mass planted on shady banks, in borders, rock gardens and under trees. Prefers shade, but will grow in full sun. Frost tender, tolerant of coastal conditions. NB: Leaves often eaten by slugs or snails when young.

ASPLENIUM bulbiferum - Hen & Chickens Fern
An easy-to-grow fern for full or partial shade. Tolerates dry soils but prefers moist conditions. New foliage is bright green and darkens as it ages. Fernlets (the 'chickens') develop on older leaves. These can be plucked off and grown. Frost tolerant.

ASTELIA banksii - Wharawhara
A New Zealand native flax-like plant with curving silvery-green leaves and panicles of fragrant, pale green flowers on 50cm stems. On female plants, the flowers produce greenish-white fruit which become magenta-purple when mature. Tolerant of dry soils and coastal extremes; does best in a location which avoids the hottest midday sun.

ASTELIA chathamica - Chatham Is. Astelia
An attractive tufted, flax-like plant, found naturally on the forest-floor or perched in trees. Silvery-green leaves make a dramatic contrast in mixed plantings, especially with purple or red foliaged plants. Small bird-attracting fruit follows inconspicuous flowers. Will grow in full sun, but prefers part or full shade; coastal hardy and needs well drained soils.

ASTELIA nervosa Westland
A New Zealand native flax-like plant with rusty reddish foliage and panicles of flowers appearing in summer. On female plants, the flowers produce greenish-white fruit, which become magenta-purple when mature. Likes open free draining soil, good air movement and partial shade.

Grows in sunny to shady conditions but prefers some shade. Has long fronds, sprouting from a tufted crown, can develop a small trunk. Easy to grow.

A vigorous camellia with good upright form and masses of pure white, very formal rose-form medium sized flowers, early autumn. Flowers do not bruise brown. Very hardy and easy to grow. Often found naturally on streamsides; used extensively in revegetation projects. Grows in full sun to deep shade, in dry to damp soils.

COPROSMA propinqua var. martinii Taiko
A spreading, dense ground cover or wall spiller, forming an attractive mound of little shiny dark green leaves on weeping branchlets which appear to cascade to ground level. Vigorous and hardy, tolerating poor, dry or sandy conditions, coastal spray, sun or shade.

COROKIA X VIRGATA Emerald 'n' Jade
A very hardy shrub for almost any well drained situation, including coastal, dry and windy, full sun or part shade. Forms an upright, multi branched shrub with fine green leaves and greyish stems. Masses of tiny yellow summer flowers are followed by small yellow autumn berries, loved by birds. Excellent as a low clipped hedge or small screen, and quite happy under big trees.

COROKIA X VIRGATA Frosted Chocolate
A very hardy shrub for full sun or partial shade. Will grow under big trees and on the coast. Tiny yellow flowers are followed by red berries. Chocolate-brown leaves intensify in colour in cooler months. Excellent as a low clipped hedge or small screen.

DACRYDIUM cupressinum - Rimu
A slow-growing, eventually very tall, long-living forest giant, with straight trunk, neat conical shape and graceful, weeping foliage. Prefers a moist, semi- or fully-shaded position, protected from wind when young, but will cope with dryer soils and full sun once established. Mulching is helpful in early years. Birds are attracted to small fruits on female trees in autumn.

DIANELLA intermedia (syn. Dianella nigra) - Turutu, NZ Blueberry
Flax-like and small, this NZ native features star shaped flowers followed in autumn by indigo berries which birds enjoy. Perfect for adding colour and interest to shady spots in the garden or for shaded areas in revegetation plantings. Hardy to frost, it will thrive in filtered shade in average to well drained soils.

DICKSONIA squarrosa - Wheki, Rough Tree Fern
Grows slowly to about 6m, with shorter, harsher fronds than most other tree ferns, and a characteristic 'skirt' of dead fronds on the slender black trunk. Will tolerate some exposure to the elements, (sun, shade, moist, dry or coastal conditions), but prefers a site with partial shade and minimal wind. Copes better with sun and wind if roots are protected by mulching.

FUCHSIA procumbens - Creeping Fuchsia
A beautiful prostrate New Zealand native with soft mid green, heart shaped leaves and small tubular yellow flowers followed by showy red berries which last through autumn. Perfect for rock gardens, trailing over walls or planting under trees. Coastal hardy and will take sandy or gravelly soils; prefers well draining soils in winter and a shady spot. Vigorous growing.

GRISELINIA littoralis - Broadleaf, Kapuka
Tough but very good-looking evergreen native for shelter; makes an elegant trimmed hedge. Contrasts well with variegated pittosporums in mixed plantings. Tolerates strong winds/coastal conditions and also grows inland, withstanding heavy frost. Grows in any soil and responds to feeding with faster growth and lush appearance. Avoid wet sites.
